I am bound to walk among the wounded and the slain
WHO Artemis and Matthew (with a cameo by Joseph)
WHAT The aftermath of Liam's slaughter of the Phoenix Sabbat
WHERE Just outside of Phoenix, AZ
WHEN November 2009
NOTES None
WARNINGS Mentions of blood and gore
Why were warehouses so uniform? It was a silly thing to wonder about, in light of the carnage all around her, but as Artemis stood in the middle of the empty chamber, she couldn't help but notice that one warehouse looked like another looked like another. And back and back and back. They were all drab and cold and damp. And there was always the infernal racket of something dripping somewhere.
Joseph immediately set himself to the task of disposing the bodies. He was going to take them outside, he told her. He'd burn them in a ditch. He was, perhaps, just a little too efficient with the work, leaving Artemis to wonder about what he had been. But it was fine with her, really. She liked practical and efficient people. She could tell from his aura that he was fuming, furious with Liam for taking off with Diana like that. The manual labor would do him good, she decided. Let him calm down before they made their next move.
As for Artemis, the next move was the same as always: Investigating. She'd already made some cursory notes on the numbers and facts of the scene. But now to interpret it all.
So she found herself standing beside the ragged remains of several hemp ropes, hanging from a rafter in the ceiling. They'd been torn, not cut. And they were soaked in blood. She would have to touch them, read the emotions hidden in them. But her heightened senses suddenly detected someone else nearby.
"Fee, fi, fo, fum," she whispered into the dark.
